This article “Broken men and NFL's broken system: Why life after the game is so difficult” talks about how the NFL does not care about retired players. Also after about 2 years NFL players are broke with no money, because their life they worked so hard to have was gone so fast. Now these NFL players don’t know what to do with their lives because they retire at such a young age.
During a football players career it was so easy for them, because they have people telling them where to be what time to be there at. Also when players have problems they can go to the locker room to talk to their teammates or agents about it. But when a football player gets let go and retires they don’t know what to do anymore. They are so used to just having people telling them what to do that now they are all alone lost not knowing what to do. People that work for the NFL, “They’re too busy making sure whoever replaced you knows the routine you just left. Believe it or not, the NFL actually has what it calls a “Transition Assistance Program,” but that’s only for players who know it’s there.” With this players are lost and in 2 years figure out they are broke. The life they have worked for their whole life disappears, and leaves them nothing.
With this the multi billion dollar league creates barely any kind of help system for retired NFL football players that are still really young in life to technically retire. How can people that work hard everyday, and bring in breaking amounts of revenue for this huge corporate company be forgotten about and given nothing after all they have done. Also another outrageous thing about the NFL is that “Half of the players in the NFL won’t even qualify for pension benefits in the first place, so there’s no safety net waiting for them when they get older.” Now these Players that do so much won’t even have any type of pension for them when they are actually too old to work. Finally football players don’t really know what’s going to happen to them once they are in the league and once their short 2-4 year contract is over. These young players don’t realize their lives are going to be horrible in a couple years. Many football players try fighting the NFL saying they should get some sort of money after their career is over, but all fail because the contracts that the players sign say you will only get this certain amount of money and that’s all. Overall a NFL football players life after football is filled with debt and regret.
With this All these young football players that make it to the NFL don’t realize that once their contract is over and they don’t get resigned they are put in a horrible situation. Why because these young players still think they are going to stay millionaires but in reality they are not. Why these players lose all their money real fast is because they don’t know a lot about taxes and all that kind of stuff. When they are spending millions of dollars on a house or a car they don’t know that they are going to keep having to pay a lot of money for all the things they bought. When they finally notice they are going broke they lose everything they had. Finally these players that didn’t get resigned have no money, have no degree and have no retirement fund.
